Have a Safe Spring Break

Today was the awards ceremony.  Addie Hornbeck will represent our class this month.  Congratulations to Addie.
Darrian Miller received a bus award for his excellent behavior while riding the bus.
Addie is the Students of the month.
We took unit 5 reading assessment.  Results will be sent home following the break.

Mr. Hanzel volunteered as a WATCH D.O.G.  today. We want to thank him for helping Ms. Tipton prepare for the planting unit.
Ask your child to explain "how to plant a seed. "   They should be able to sequence the steps in order.
Students investigated the properties of soil.  We learned that soil is made up of many materials.

Then they prepared their seeds for planting.  Each student labeled a stick with the name of their plants.

We discussed what plants need to grow.  ( sunlight, water, soil)
Then we made observations about a plant that Ms. Tipton brought in to the room.  The students think that the plant is dead...  but we planted it in  a pot and we will make observations over the next two months.

We listed our observations about the plant.

The students examined the different sizes, shapes, textures, colors...  of the seeds. They went around the room to investigate the seeds of others.  We compared and contrasted the various seeds.

We have several control group seeds. One group of seeds are planted in sand.  Another is inside the cabinet, in a dark location, we are going to over water one set and underwater another set.  All of these factors will lead to our knowledge of what is needed for a plant to survive.

Students recorded the planting information in their science journals.   We will use our journals to record changes over time.

We concluded the seed lesson by writing a "How to Plant Seeds Inside" piece.  Being able to write a "how to " piece is a first grade standard.

Ask your child about the 5th grade vs the teachers basketball game.  The students enjoyed participating in this special activity.

Here are a couple of short videos from today's game.
Have a safe Spring Break.   Please encourage your child to read for fun over the break.  We do not have a weekly reading assignment over the break.  Weekly reading assignments and spelling words will be sent home after the break.

Fire Safety and Gold Coin Reward Celebration

A special thank you the Franklin County Fire Department for stopping by Hearn.  We learned all about fire safety.

The students got to tour the firetruck.

We are enjoying special jellybean treats from our special friend.  Students that returned the signed Chapter 5 assessment will get one sweet treat.

When we are on our best behavior, the Easter Bunny sings our class a special song.
Students worked together in pairs to generate a sentence that included personal pronouns and commas in a series.

Ask your child about Ms. Viola Swamp stopping by our room.
Each team of students shared their cooperative learning activity.
We took Chapter 5 Language Arts assessments today.  Every child has the graded assessment in their "return to school" side of their Bee Binders.  Please look over the assessment, and sign and return it tomorrow.   Students receive 5 Dojo points after the assessment is signed and returned.

Make sure and have your child explain how we traded in our "gold coins" for a pizza and drink reward.  The coins were earned in the Month of March.   Pizza and a Drink - 10 coins, a drink only- 2 coins, watching the movie-1 coin.

We will take unit 5 reading assessment tomorrow.    Note: no spelling test.
