Pajama day tomorrow

Don't forget that the children are allowed to wear their pajamas to school tomorrow. This activity is part of the red ribbon activities at Hearn elementary. The day is entitled follow your dreams.

Also, I hope to see a representative from each family at our curriculum night on Thursday at 5:30 PM.  I will be covering many important items about your child's education.

Please remind your child that the behavioral expectations will remain the same for the next few days. I realized that Halloween is an exciting time in a child's life, but we need to remember that school is an educational setting.

We will be participating in watching a Halloween movie at 1:40 on Friday. Students are encouraged to bring one additional healthy snack to eat during the class movie time. They will eat their own snack.

Pumpkin Investigation

London was visited by the the Great Pumpkin for the best citizenship in the room on Tuesday.

Today was entitled " The Great Pumpkin Investigation."
Students used various techniques to calculate the total number of lines on their individual pumpkins.
The greatest number of lines was 32.  The pumpkin with the least amount of lines had 18 lines.

We learned about circumference today.   Since we all do not have a flexible tape measures, we generated a list of ideas for how we could measure the circumference.
We decided that yarn would be the most flexible way to find out the length around the middle of each pumpkin.    Students  worked as partners to complete these activities.

Then the laid their yarn on the tape measure.  We learned about the importance of starting at the 0 inch mark.
We also used the standard unit of pounds to weigh each pumpkin.

Ask you child about the sink and float investigation station.

We used the nonstandard unit of unifix cubes to measure the height of each pumpkin.

 Here are the 1lb pumpkins.
 2 lb pumpkin club
 3 lb pumkin club
 4 lb pumpkin club
 5 lb pumpkin club
We cut open a class pumpkin to talk about the parts of the pumpkin.   Tomorrow we will use tally marks to discover the total number of seed in the pumpkin.

Students  separated  the seeds from the pulp.

Ask your child to explain the following words of the day:   estimation, circumference and hypothesis

Pumpkins Everywhere

Look at the 5 students that whispered the error in last nights blog.  The blog is a wonderful way to know that we are doing on a daily basis in Team Tipton!

Here is today's literature club book.  Our I can statement: " I can tell the plot of the story using BME - beginning, middle  and end.
Ask your child to tell you about the BME of today's story.

We are working on ? marks and questioning strategies.  Who, What, Where, When and Why???

During read-a-loud we listened for the question words.  When we listed questions that we wanted to have answered as we read the text to solve a mystery.

Darrian Miller is this week's super star student.
A went outside and the story starter was " Once upon a time there was a perfect pumpkin in a field....
Mrs. Black's class and Ms. Tipton's class orally added key details to the story to come up with a creative pumpkin tall tale.   Ask you child to verbalize the story to you.
What a special treat!   Each 1st grade student received a free pumpkin today.   We want to say a very special thank you to Mrs. Greathouse's family for their donation of pumpkins.   We will be using the pumpkins in class for many purposes.

Here is the wagon that the Greathouse family  used to deliver the pumpkins to us.

We carefully cleaned the pumpkins to prepare them for our future lessons.

Don't forget to ask you child about what they are doing during the daily 5 center rotations.   Also, keep in mind that we are starting weekly reading clubs.  Each student is bringing home
a reading club bag. Their assigned day to return the work is listed on the front of the bag.  Each student has one week to read the enclosed book and complete the assignments.   Books should be read several times at home prior to returning them to school.
