Plants are Delicious and Bowling for Subtraction

Don't forget tomorrow is picture day.  10-2-13   Our class will take pictures at 9:30

We are studying the life cycle of plants.  Each student should be able to describe a plants life cycle, name and label the parts of the plant, and identify which part of the plant that we eat.
.
For instance- we eat the roots of turnips, carrots and potatoes.
We eat the leaves of lettuce and spinach.
We eat the stem of asparagus.
We eat the seeds of corn and peas.
We eat the Flower of cauliflower

We are growing out own sweet potatoes in the room.    This one is an example that the children used to verbally assess their knowledge of the parts of a plant.
We also started a tomato  and sweet potato plant in the room.  We will be recording changes that take place over time.  The students are recoding data in their science journals.

Today we "Bowled for Facts of 10".  We used this hands on method of subtraction to review all the facts of 10.    Students are making connections between fact families.

10 is the whole.

minus 8 ( parts)
Equals 2 ( part)

Family of facts
   10-8=2  or  10-2=8
    2+8=10   or 8+2+1-

10-1=0

Stop by a visit our discovery center.  It's full of living life cycle examples.
