Fun with contractions and Character Parade

Students each received part of a contraction on their backs.  Then they had to find their match!   We love to get up and moving , while still learning.

Each student shared their character parade book with another student.  Ms. Tipton also read a short passage from each book to the class.  We reviewed Main Idea and Key Details as we read each book.

We know have two butterflies. Stop by and see our new additions.

The teachers also participated in the Parade of Characters today.  Ask your child to tell you their favorite book character.

Here are all our Book Characters.  We had a great day of learning. All the students deserve to be praised for excellent behavior.

My World

Students really enjoyed using a class set of maps to identify the 7 continents of the world.
Stop by our room to see our continent and oceans of the world large globes.  The students should all be able to locate all 7 continents using their own globe.
Each student should complete the short homework assignment that is related to our studies.   My Nationality is...   , I am from..., and that is in the continent of...

Also, don't forget that tomorrow at 8:30 we will have the parade of characters.

Geometry and our World

Students are learning to identify geometric plan shapes by their proper names.  They are also using hands on materials to determine how many plane shapes can be used to make another plane shape.

Two rhombuses are equivalent to a hexagon.
6 Triangles are equivalent to a hexagon.  3 triangles are equivalent to a rhombus.

We are working on contractions this week. Ask your child to explain the job of the apostrophe.
Our whole group reading book for the week is There was An Old Lady Who Swallowed Some Book!     Students are using this book to identify various punctuation marks, contractions and rhyming words.
Students matched the rhyming words that we found within the text. This was the assessment that each child completed today.
Students enjoy checking their answers by using the interactive pens.

Today the students completed a  "Hands On" Show what you know. They used the geometric shapes to complete their assessment.

Sydney Sutton is our Star Student of the week.  She shared her " All About Me" poster with the class today.
In Social Studies we learned about the 7 Continents.  Ask your child to sing the continent song to you.  Students are making the globe to display in our room.  We are labeling the 7 continents and the major oceans of our world.

Don't forget that we will have our character parade on Thursday October 31st.  See Ms. Tipton if you need a  book or any costume props.

Hat Day

Ms. Rogers and Ms. Tipton are modeling their hats for "Put A LID on Drugs!"
Mrs. Collier stops by every morning to greet the children. Today she modeled her fabulous hat for the class.  We really love having her stop by and visit. The children enjoy sharing what we are learning.  It also helps them verbalize the "I can statements " and expectations for our lessons.
Megan Collier got some first hand experience with classroom management today.

Student used their individualized book bags to pair/share read with a buddy.  Two books are assigned to each student on a weekly basis.  The books are given to each child according to their reading level.  They also get to add one or two books that they select.   Children are given the opportunity to read on their own, in small group, and with another student.
Take a look at how our class "Put a Lid On Drugs!"

We worked on Geometry all week.  As you know, the children went on scavenger hunts, learned about flip, slides and turns, and used tangrams to great various pictures.

Many students used the tangrams to create their own pictures. They then orally described the shapes that they used in their creations.  They had to use the correct plane shape name and tell how many of each shape that they used in their creation.

Ask your child about the mystery rock person of the day. Have them describe how it is used, and when we use the rocks. Here is an example of one of the rocks.
The "Great Pumpkin" is watching for students that excel in work habits.  Today's award winner was Ethan Dunn.  Each student receive a homework pass and a small treat inside the pumpkin.  It will continue looking for hard ,respectful workers next week.
Sydney and Wedd really enjoyed making their own creation.
Stop by and see our symmetry bulletin board. Ask your child to describe flips, slides and turns that they used in their creation.  Each child should be bringing home their mammal creation, written description of mammal characteristics, and their Family of Facts math houses.
Have a fabulous weekend.   Here is the code word:  " Symmetry"
