Popcorn Dojo Reward

No spelling assessment next week.  Students will review all phonics rules to date.
We will use the additional time to  focus on all the language skills for unit 5.  Students will take the unit 5 formative assessment on Friday. The  assessment covers: using the correct verb tenses, possessive nouns, writing dates correctly, correct way to write proper nouns, ending punctuation marks, sorting word families into categories, and prepositions)

Students are working on their graphic organizers for the on demand prompt: Which bug is the scariest?  spider or bee
Students will be given the prompt on Monday.   They used the graphic organizer to make their selection and to generate at least 3 reasons that they think that bug is the scariest.
Lena made a real life connection.  She thinks a spider is the scariest because " one time when she was little she put on a mitten and a spider was inside of it."    That is an excellent way to start an opinion writing assignment.
Students are learning to ask each other clock questions.
During work on writing: It is important to be able to tell time because....   ( examples: draw and label the time you do a certain thing.   piano lessons, reading time, baseball practice, riding your bike..

Today the students all learned how to answer comprehension multiple choice questions. They completed the worksheets about their weekly reading assignments.  Please note that it is very important that the students return their weekly work. Not only do they receive a homework grade, but we continue lessons during the week that are based around the story that they read at home.

Students are encouraged to share their journal entries with the class.  At this time I point our a few errors, or ideas to strengthen their writing.

Share day helps us practice a variety of social and academic skills.   It is wonderful to see the student share confidently and be respectful of others as they speak.  Each student calls on two peer for questions about their share item. We are working on formulating good questions.

Here is the seed:
We used our clock knowledge to time how long it took for the first kernel to pop.  We even learned about milliseconds.

60 seconds in one minute....

Corn is used in many products....,
We popped the kernels in a variety of different ways.

Then the students voted on how many "Dojo" points everyone should need in order to participate in the reward.  The students voted on at least 20.  Make sure you ask your child if they were part of the reward celebration.

Art had a special guest.  The students should all be able to explain what they learned.

His name was Les Greeman from Broadway Clay.  A special thanks for Mr. Greeman taking time to visit Hearn Elementary and share his talents.
Have a safe weekend.
