Martin Luther King Activities/Segregation /Boosterthon Kick Off

Note: each student should be bringing home their Geometry assessment today.  Please take time to go over the assessments with your child.  Praise them if they did well!  If your child would like an opportunity to improve their score, let me know.  Students can retest on Friday.

Layton shared a a story with the class during read-a-loud.
Ms. Tipton celebrated her Birthday on Tuesday.  All the students helped make my day special.
Prior to a formative assessment on pronouns we read The Planet without Pronouns.
We are learning to highlight text to located specific comprehension information.

Ask your child to explain why the girls got candy...
and the boys only got carrot sticks.    ( it was part of our segregation activity)

The girls all got to eat with Ms. Tipton...

And the boys had to sit a separate table.  The boys also had a "NO TALK".  They certainly were not happy about the no talk and separation.   They didn't understand why the boys were being punished.

Mr. Cletis came to the boys rescue.  He  came in an lead a discussion about how everyone was feeling.  Of course the girls were delighted to be treated special, and the boys were actually rather upset of their treatment.    Some of the girls started bragging about their special treatment.  They started to say that they were better than boys.   We wrote a  journal entry about our feelings.

Then the tides turned---  the boys got to have birthday cookies and juice.  The girls were no longer happy!

We of course let the girls have cookies at the conclusion of the lesson.  We talked in depth about being kind to everyone and treating others with respect.   I hope that every student learned a life long lesson today.  I feel that they all have a much better understanding about the importance of treating others with respect at all times.

Leslie shared a special treat with Ms. Tipton.
Today the Reading clubs  worked on vowel-consonant- vowel words.
As a whole class, we worked on main idea and key details.
Boosterthon materials are coming home today.  A detailed letter explaining the program is inside your child's BEE binder.   The school is raising money for an ipad lab and more playground equipment.
