How cold is it?

Our class is learning strategies for figuring out unfamiliar words.  Do you know the meaning of the following words? -creche, brood pouch, krill, rookery, molting, tobogganing
Well, we are do.  We also can explain multiple ways to figure out words that we don't know.  Ask your child to explain a few ways that they figure out new words and their meanings.
Our penguin vocabulary books will be the border for our new bulletin board.
Wedd was the weather girl for Jan.15th.   She did a nice job with her presentation.
We are also learning various strategies to increase our speed and accuracy when we complete math facts.    We have been "rapping our doubles facts".   Ask your child the doubles rap words.
We made a doubles and neighbor fact town to put outside our classroom.   An example of a double is 3+3=6   an example of it's neighbor would be  3+4=5
Each student designed a doubles and a neighbor fact for our town.   We have two of each creation.  Stop by and view our work.

As you know our room is always "hopping."   Hopper and Swimmy now have a clean habitat. A huge thank you to our pet monitors for the week- Parker and Ethan.  They did a wonderful job creating a safe and clean environment for our class pets.

Jake Scarbrough was selected as the first grade student of the month in December.  He received the award on Wednesday.  This is quite an accomplishment.  We are very proud of him for being selected.  A huge thank you to Crown Trophy for sponsoring this special award.
Look at our snazzy meteorologist- Adam.  Not only did Adam dress up to present the daily forecast, but he also made a wonderful chart full of accurate weather facts.   Way to go Adam!
You can't learn about Penguins, without understanding the weather, temperature and appropriate habitat that penguins need.  We seized the moment to learn about snowflakes, Celsius and Fahrenheit, when water freezes....and how to read a thermometer.

Don't forget to study for the Friday Spelling Assessment.
Tomorrow the students will be creating penguin  nests out of various material for a special " Save the Penguins" lesson.
